You finally have an answer

Now, here is where to go next.

The hardest part of lipedema is not the diagnosis. It is finding a doctor who actually understands it. You can now book directly with Dr Jonie Girouard, a lipedema specialist who lives with the condition herself, or see one of the clinicians she has trained, in person.

Real appointments with a real lipedema specialist, by video or in person across North Carolina and Wyoming.

Why this is so hard

The hardest part was never the diagnosis.

Woman with a disappointed expression after a doctor visit experience

It is finding someone who takes it seriously. Most women with lipedema spend years being told to eat less and move more. That it is just weight. That the pain is in their head. Passed from one doctor to the next, each one missing it.

By the time you finally have a name for what is happening to your body, the question that comes up again and again in our community is always the same: where do I actually go, and who can help me?

You do not need another doctor who has never really heard of lipedema. You need one who has it.
Why a diagnosis matters

A diagnosis is not the finish line. It is the key.

Here is what most women are never told. The diagnosis is not the destination. It is the thing that unlocks everything else. Without it, the door to real options stays shut. With it, it opens.

Booking an appointment formalises your diagnosis, and that is what makes the rest possible: the medications, the supplements and the lifestyle changes that actually move the needle, including the options you have probably been wondering about for a while now.

Medications
Including the ones you have seen everywhere. A straight answer on whether they fit someone with lipedema, and what to pair them with.
Supplements
The ones that genuinely support women with lipedema, and the ones that are a waste of money.
Lifestyle
The changes that work with lipedema, not against it, so your effort finally counts.
There is no single protocol. With over a million possible combinations of medications, supplements and lifestyle changes, the real work is matching the right ones to you. That is exactly what Dr Jonie and her team are trained to do, drawn from her years treating women with lipedema and her ongoing research.

Who you will be seeing

Meet Dr Jonie Girouard

Dr Jonie Girouard presenting at a live workshop, hands gesturing to explain a concept

Dr Jonie is a lipedema specialist, board-certified in Obesity Medicine. She has spent the last 15 years caring for women with lipedema, and she lives with the condition herself.

Alongside her husband Dr. Michael Girouard — who has spent over 40 years helping women with excess body weight, including lipedema — the clinics were built around the patients other doctors could not help. Dr Jonie trains every clinician on the team personally. When you sit down with her, you are talking to someone who has stood exactly where you are standing now.

What to expect

What happens when you book

1
You are properly assessed
Not rushed. A real conversation about your history, your body, and everything you have already tried.
2
You get a clear answer
Whether it is lipedema, which stage you are at, and what that actually means for you.
3
You leave with a plan
Built for your situation: the things that will make a difference, and the things that will not.
4
You are not on your own after
Follow-up appointments, and a team who knows your case, for what can be a long road.

Why this is different

She has it too
Lived experience, not just a textbook chapter.
Lipedema-first
Most doctors barely cover it in training. This is what she does.
A plan, not a brush-off
You leave knowing your next steps, not with more questions.

Your questions, answered

Do I have to live in a particular state?
To see Dr Jonie by video, you will need to be in Wyoming, Montana and North Carolina. The clinical team sees new patients in person across North Carolina and Wyoming; follow-ups can be in person or by video. More states are coming. If you are elsewhere, see the note below.
What if I am not sure I actually have lipedema?
That is exactly what the appointment is for. You will get a proper assessment and a clear answer, either way.
How long is the appointment?
A new patient telemedicine appointment with Dr Jonie is 50 minutes. In-person visits are similar.
Do you take insurance?
We do not bill insurance directly, but you will get an itemised receipt you can submit to your insurer for possible reimbursement. It takes a few minutes.
Do I need to prepare anything?
To make the most of your first visit, having an up-to-date weight, height and waist circumference is handy. A recent blood pressure may be needed to assess for some medications. A baseline body composition, often available at a local gym, may also be helpful. For in-person visits we will do all of these on the day.
Can Dr Jonie prescribe medication?
Where it is appropriate for your situation, yes. She will talk you through the options that may help manage your symptoms and what fits you best.
What does it cost?
$349 for a new patient telemedicine appointment with Dr Jonie. $159 for a new patient visit with her team in person. Follow-up appointments are lower: $149 by video with Dr Jonie, and from $75 with the team.
Is it really Dr Jonie I am seeing?
Yes. The video appointment is one-to-one with Dr Jonie herself, not a stand-in.

Not in one of these states yet? Dr Jonie's team is growing. Add your name and we will let you know the moment we can see you where you are.
